[IT}-- Windows Search 4.0 ya lanzado

Microsoft acaba de lanzar la versión 4.0 de su sistema de búsqueda instantánea de escritorio, Windows Search, de la cual ya habíamos visto una Tech preview hace algunos meses.

En el caso de que tengamos Windows XP, y no tengamos instalada una versión previa de esta programa, Windows Search 4.0 desempeñará el papel de un complemento del sistema operativo, una aplicación adicional que reemplazará al sistema de búsqueda que viene por defecto, permitiéndonos obtener resultados mientras escribimos, visualizar los archivos sin abrirlos, etc. Y, de paso, eliminar al desagradable “perro buscador” que viene por defecto.

En cambio, si tenemos Windows Vista (o Windows Search 3.0 en Windows XP), Windows Search 4.0 no agregará nuevas funciones al sistema de búsqueda del que ya disponemos, sino que simplemente mejorará el rendimiento del proceso de indexación, agregará compatibilidad con ciertos sistemas de red, y nos entregará resultados de forma más rápida.

[IT}-- System Restore displays a blank calendar

If you run the System Restore tool on XP in order to restore your computer to a previous state, you might find that the calendar on the left side of the “Choose a Restore Point” window is not displayed or is blank.

This happens because the file association for HMTL is not in the registry. You can fix the problem by editing the registry. For instructions, see KB article 313853.

[IT}-- Another SP3 Problem: Device Manager Empty and/or Network icons gone

It appears that many people are having the same problem with XP Service Pack 2: after installing on some systems, the Device Manager doesn’t display your devices and/or the icons in Network Connections disappear. Folks have reported that removing SP3 doesn’t fix the problem, nor does system restore. This appears to be due to corruption in certain registry keys. Samsung ha anunciado el lanzamiento del dispositivo de almacenamiento en estado sólido (SSD) más rápido del mundo, capaz de leer datos a una velocidad de 200 megabytes por segundo y almacenar 256 gigabytes.

El prototipo del dispositivo, que ha sido presentado en un evento de Samsung en Taipei, tiene unas dimensiones de 9,5 milímetros de alto y 10 centímetros de largo.

Este tipo de dispositivos de almacenamiento usan chips de memoria flash en vez de discos magnéticos giratorios, utilizados en los discos duros convencionales. Entre sus ventajas: un arranque más rápido, mayor rapidez en la lectura de datos o bajo consumo energético. El nuevo prototipo presentado por Samsung consume sólo 0,9 watios-.

El dispositivo de almacenamiento no llegará a las tiendas hasta después del verano, según publica la prensa coreana que también anuncia que la unidad contará con sofisticado proceso de codificación de datos que impide que los datos almacenados en el SSD sean vistos de forma no autorizada.

[IT}-- HP tells customers with AMD computers not to install SP3 yet

Microsoft is scurrying to develop a fix for the endless reboot problem that we reported on in last week’s WXPnews that affects their systems with AMD processors.

lthough there is a manual fix (to which we provided a link), HP has advised customers who have the AMD systems to delay installing SP3 until a patch is released.

The problem is apparently caused by the hardware vendor loading the incorrect image (one designed for Intel processors) on their AMD machines. Read more here:

Microsoft Corp. ha anunciado la ampliación del número de formatos de documentos soportados en la suite de productividad con mayor implantación en el mercado.

Microsoft Office 2007 Microsoft Office system ya soporta 20 formatos de archivos diferentes en sus aplicaciones Microsoft Office Word, Office Excel y Office PowerPoint.

Con el lanzamiento del Service Pack 2 (SP2) de Microsoft Office 2007, previsto para el primer semestre de 2009, la lista se ampliará e incluirá soporte para XML Paper Specification (XPS), Portable Document Format (PDF) 1.5, PDF/A y Open Document Format (ODF) v1.1.

Con la llegada del SP2, los clientes podrán abrir, editar y guardar documentos basados en el estándar ODF, así como guardar documentos en los formatos fijos XPS y PDF directamente desde la aplicación, sin necesidad de instalar ningún otro software o código adicional. También permitirá configurar ODF como el formato de archivos por defecto para Office 2007.

Asimismo, con el objetivo de que usuarios de versiones anteriores de Microsoft Office (Office XP y Office 2003) puedan utilizar del mismo modo ODF, la compañía seguirá colaborando con la comunidad de código abierto en el proceso de desarrollo y mejora del traductor Open XML-ODF en SourceForge.net.

Además, Microsoft ha definido una hoja de ruta para su implementación de Open XML, aprobado en marzo como estándar internacional de archivos por ISO (International Organization for Standarization) e IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission). Open XML ya está soportado en Office 2007, y la compañía prevé continuar este soporte en la próxima versión de Microsoft Office system, de nombre en código “Office 14″.

Microsoft también se ha comprometido a ofrecer a los clientes de Office la posibilidad de abrir, editar y guardar documentos en el estándar de formato de archivos nacional de China, Uniform Office Format (UOF). Microsoft apoya el proceso de desarrollo del proyecto de traductor UOF-Open XML en Sourceforge y, además, promoverá la distribución y facilidad de uso del traductor.

A medida que UOF se desarrolle y sea ampliamente adoptado en el mercado chino, la compañía distribuirá junto con Office el soporte para este formato para sus clientes en China.
